Treating Ocular Diseases in Winston-Salem

At Eyes on Trade, we believe it doesn’t matter how good your glasses look if your eyes aren’t operating at peak performance. Simply put, style is important, but your eye health comes first. During one of our comprehensive eye exams, our optometrists provide screenings for a number of different eye conditions, but here are a few of the most common ones we can help with.

Winston Salem Dry Eye Treatment

Treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye is caused by improper tear function or production — either insufficient or low-quality tears — and lead to irritating, chronic symptoms like itchy, dry, painful, and watery eyes. 16 million Americans are diagnosed with dry eye, with an estimated 6 million more suffering without being undiagnosed. That’s a lot of people who are living with a level of discomfort that they shouldn’t have to be. If our eye doctors determine you have the condition during a dry eye test, we’ll scale our treatment to your needs; for some, artificial tears to soothe the symptoms and some smart lifestyle changes to address underlying causes are enough, but for others, we may prescribe medicated drops or punctal plugs to get to the root of the problem.

Early Detection of Glaucoma

Glaucoma describes a group of conditions that build pressure inside your eye. This, in turn, can press on your optic nerve, causing vision loss over time. Whether your eye is producing too much internal fluid, or its drainage is clogged, we can help decrease the pressure. Glaucoma tests are a part of every eye exam, but if there’s some reason why you might be at higher risk — family history with the disease, for example — we’ll keep a closer eye on it. The earlier we detect glaucoma, the easier it is to treat and avoid vision loss.

Slowing the Progression of AMD

Your macula — the center of your retina — plays a major role in your vision. Over time, the macula can weaken, which may lead to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). If left untreated, macular degeneration can cause central vision loss and blind spots. In most cases, the effects of AMD can’t be reversed, and regular macular degeneration tests are key to catching the disease in its early stages. During a macular degeneration screening, our eye doctors will evaluate your retina for signs of disease and help you plan the treatment necessary to preserve your vision. There are various stages of AMD, but macular degeneration treatment may stop it from progressing.
